Artificial intelligence systems, which have entered every aspect of life in recent months, will now be used for natural disasters. AI developed by scientists in the US has aroused curiosity by detecting 70 percent of earthquakes a week in advance in seven-month tests.
US researchers develop AI that predicts earthquakes 70% correctly
Researchers from the University of Texas have started using an artificial intelligence system to predict earthquakes. The tool developed by the university surprised with a 70 percent success rate in earthquakes in China.
According to the statement, the artificial intelligence was trained with five years of data recorded by China’s seismic network. Accordingly, it learned to detect statistical patterns in the vibrations of an approaching earthquake. As a result, it was realized that it could accurately predict earthquakes at a depth of about 350 km.
The researchers believe their method could revolutionize earthquake preparedness if applied to regions with strong seismic monitoring, such as California, Turkey and Japan. The artificial intelligence will next be tested and improved on Texas’ seismic network.
Prof. Sergey Fomel from the research team said: “Predicting earthquakes will be a sacred mission. We are not yet close to predicting anywhere in the world. But what we have achieved tells us that what we thought was an impossible problem is solvable.”
With the completion of the training of artificial intelligence, it is aimed to combine the system with physics-based models. Successful prediction of earthquakes can minimize both loss of life and economic impact.
